They want your vote: General election candidates for Newham

The line-up of candidates for Newham’s three seats in the 2024 General Election campaign, compiled by Daisy Miles.

Across Newham’s three constituencies, a total of 26 candidates are standing. Here is a who’s who by constituency.

East Ham

Stephen Timms

Sir Stephen Timms (Labour) 

Timms has been the MP for East Ham since 1994 and has held a series of ministerial posts. He says he will back Labour’s “plan for a fairer, greener Britain”.

Maria Higson

Maria Higson (Conservative and Unionist Party) 

This is Higson’s first attempt at getting into parliament after mixed success in local council elections. In 2018 Higson was elected to represent the Hampstead Town ward in Camden but later lost out in Basingstoke and Deane 2018.

Rose Pearce

Rosie Pearce: Green Party 

Rosie Pearce is concerned about the impact of climate change on Newham’s residents. Tahir Mirza

Tahir Mirza 

Mirza was the former chair of the East Ham Labour Party, which has been suspended since March 2021. Mirza is endorsed by George Galloway of the Workers Party and says he stands for “equality, fairness and transparency”

Sathish Mohan Ramadoss

Sathish Mohan Ramadoss 

“I will fight to ensure that everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.”

Anand Sundar

Anand Kumar Sundar 

Anand Kumar Sundar is standing as an independent candidate.

Startford and Bow

Uma Kumaran

Uma Kumaran (Labour) 

Kumaran was born in East London and went to Queen Mary’s University London. She plans to reintroduce community officers, invest in affordable housing and “act tough” on cladding. See Newham Voices Interview Uma Kumaran.

Kane Blackwell

Kane Blackwell (Conservative and Unionist Party) 

Blackwell said he has “strong plans” to cut crime in the constituency, including permanently reopening Stratford Police Station. He says: “I am the candidate who will stand up for local people and local issues we care most about.”

Janey Little

Janey Little (Liberal Democrats) 

Little is the Chair of the Young Liberals and Vice Chair of Lib Dem Women. This is Little’s first attempt at a general election. See General Election 2024: Newham’s Liberal Democrats .

Jeff Evans

Jeff Evans (Reform UK) 

Jeff Evans describes himself as “anti-woke, anti-PC”. He has previously run in local elections in Enfield, once as a candidate for UKIP.

Jo Hudson-Small

Joe Hudson Small (Green Party) 

A committed activist for affordable housing and accessible public transport. See General Election 2024: Newham’s Green Party

Halima Khan

Halima Khan (Workers Party of Britain) 

Halima describes herself as a “whistleblower of the Labour Party”. Her team said: “It’s time we had a representative who will hold truth to power, for Justice for us all.”

Nizam Ali

Nizam Ali (Independent) 

Ali wants to “challenge the status quo of UK politics”. He has pledged to invest in community projects and opportunities, including youth clubs.

Omar Faruk

Omar Faruk (Independent) 

Faruk has 27 years of experience as a barrister. Should he become an MP, he will advocate for Palestine and the UK’s compliance with international law

Steve Hedley

Steve Hedley (Independent) 

Describing himself as the “independent socialist and anti-genocide candidate”, Hedley was previously a senior member of the RMT union. He has pledged to campaign for mass renationalisation as well as trade union rights in every workplace. See General Election 2024: Steve Hedley – Independent.

Fiona Lali

Fiona Lali (Independent) 

Backed by the Revolutionary Communist party, Lali said she wants to make “fundamental, revolutionary change”. She wishes to build an economy on “need not profit”

West Ham and Beckton

James Edward Asser

James Asser (Labour) 

James Asser was the deputy mayor of Newham and Chairman of the Labour Party NEC. See page 7.

Lois Austin

Lois Austin (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition)

Holly Alice Ramsey

Holly Alice Ramsay (Conservative and Unionist) 

Ramsay is campaigning to reopen Plaistow police station, which was closed in 2017. She also wants to secure investment for Newham General Hospital and ensure new developments in the constituency, including sufficient affordable housing.

Emily Bigland

Emily Bigland (Liberal Democrats) 

Bigland has 15 years of experience working in the NHS. Her political participation is motivated by her concerns over “the state of the country”. See General Election 2024: Newham’s Liberal Democrats.

Georgie David

Georgie David (Reform UK) 

David said she wants to introduce “balanced common-sense policies”. She said she would ensure the local community is heard if she’s elected, specifically elderly and vulnerable people.

Georgie David, Reform UK candidate for West Ham and Beckton, has suspended her campaign “with immediate effect” on July 2nd amid allegations of racism within the party.

Rob Callender

Robert Alexander Callender (Green Party) 

Callender describes himself as a “pragmatic Green”, meaning he believes those who can afford to should contribute more by paying windfall taxes. Callender said: “I want to ensure our area is clean, safe and has good public services”. See General Election 2024: Newham’s Green Party.

Kayode Shedowo

Kayode Shedowo (Christian People’s Alliance) 

Shedowo wants to help “tackle the root causes of poverty”. He is concerned about rising house prices and whether his children will ever be able to afford a home.

Sophia Naqvi

Sophia Navqi (Newham Independents) 

Naqvi, a self-proclaimed socialist, wants to campaign for better NHS funding, affordable housing and clean streets. She hopes residents in Newham can be “proud” of the area once again. See General Election 2024: Newham’s independents.
