Georgie David, Reform UK candidate for West Ham and Beckton, has suspended her campaign “with immediate effect” amid allegations of racism within the party.
David said she is “frustrated and dismayed” by the senior leadership’s handling of candidates reported to make racist and misogynistic remarks.
In a statement issued by the Conservative Party, she said: “I am in no doubt that the party and its senior leadership are not racist. However, as the vast majority of candidates are indeed racist, misogynistic and bigoted, I do not wish to be directly associated with people that are so vastly opposing to my own and what I stand for.”
Later, she said: “As such, I have now suspended my campaign with Reform, and I am endorsing the Conservative Party – I would encourage all of my fellow patriots to do the same.”
A spokesperson from Reform UK said they were “disappointed” David quit and they disagree with her “sweeping comments”.
Despite suspending her campaign, her name will remain on the ballot paper as it is legally too late for it to be removed.
