Hip hop dance theatre show Ebony Scrooge by ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company is an adaptation and retelling of A Christmas Carol. The show features original music from Sky Arts and Olivier Award-winning Boy Blue Co-Artistic Director Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante MBE, who was born in Forest Gate and lived in Manor Park.
Dannielle ‘Rhimes’ Lecointe, choreographer and Associate Artistic Director of ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company, is basing the show on her personal experiences and she is also celebrating her Dominican Caribbean roots.
Dannielle, who attended school and started her dance career in Newham, told Newham Voices why the show was retold using hip-hop, “Hip hop is my voice – a way to connect, challenge, and break barriers through art. A Christmas Carol shaped my childhood Christmases, so fusing the two felt inevitable: tradition meets transformation, rhythm meets redemption. It’s the story of connection told the way I know best – through movement.”
