School 360 were delighted that pupils were able to celebrate and participate in a range of events for Black History Month. A number of Year 3 children visited the Manor Park Over 50s Social Club and spoke with men and women from the Windrush generation.

They played drums, sang songs and had wonderful, insightful conversations about their experiences of coming to the UK from the Caribbean. This intergenerational event was a success and the children were also lucky enough to meet the headteacher’s father, Andrew Silvain, who is a member of the club.

The children were able to return to their classroom and discuss the stories they had heard and the valuable contributions this community has made to the UK.

One year 3 pupil said: “I enjoyed playing the drums, learning to play dominoes and finding out about St. Lucia. I didn’t realise there were so many different places in the Caribbean and I want to visit all of them!”

Headteacher Andrea Silvain said: “At School 360, we authentically weave Black History throughout our curriculum all year round. But, Black History Month is the perfect opportunity for us to celebrate and amplify the voices of Black individuals, particularly in the UK, who have made a positive contribution to the society we live in. Seeing the School 360 children learning with and from the residents at the social club was a special event that will remain with them for a long time.”

The organiser at Manor Park Over 50s Social Club, Addie Silvain, said it is important to try to include children from the local community in their events so that they can learn about Black History firsthand from the members. She said the children were curious, polite and are welcome back again anytime.
