Newham Council has welcomed a 12-hour curfew on flights from Saturday 12.30 to Sunday 12.30 imposed on London City Airport following its attempt to increase the number of flying hours.

But the airport was considering a new appeal to have the number of flight hours increased and, if successful, said councillor Ann Easter this could do away with the curfew and cause excessive noise nuisance to residents living close by.

She acknowledged the overall benefits from the flight operations, in particular that the airport employed 2000 people, many of them from Newham.

Councillor Steve Brayshaw, seconding a motion over the curfew at the September Council meeting, said that the Government needed to give more consideration to the effects of air travel on the climate.

The Council has decided to write letters to both the Secretaries of State for Housing and Local Government, and Transport urging resistance to pressure from the airport to scrap the curfew, and to lobby the government on improved policies on air travel and climate change.
