The Newham Voices article last month highlighting the problems for residents and business in the aftermath of the Forest Gate police station fire prompted action on the part of the police and the Council.

Hotels in the area, which have been hard-hit by the closure of Romford Road after the fire on 6 March, received calls from the Council to check on the situation of families who have been placed in the hotels as temporary accommodation.

The police also responded by opening up a front-office inside the Stratford Police Station in West Ham Lane for the public to use and, after almost six weeks of disruptions on the roads around the station, the police announced that road closures would end on 18 April.

Superintendent Dan Card, in charge of policing in Newham, said: “I would like to thank the Forest Gate community for their patience while some of the roads surrounding the police station were closed. We understand the frustration from residents and businesses of these roads being shut for a sustained period of time but safety is absolutely our priority.”
