The life and work of Lee Alexander McQueen, one of Newham’s most iconic and visionary creators will be celebrated on June 8 as part of Newham Heritage Month. McQueen, who died in 2010, produced fashion designs that became Royal favourites. Catherine, Princess of Wales’ wedding dress, Coronation gown and Coronation concert suit were designed by the Alexander McQueen fashion brand.
At the time of Catherine, Princess of Wales’ wedding to Prince William the Royal Family website said: “Miss Middleton chose British brand Alexander McQueen for the beauty of its craftsmanship and its respect for traditional workmanship and the technical construction of clothing.”
She was looking to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterises Alexander McQueen’s work.
Lee, the man behind the brand, spent his childhood in Newham. He attended Carpenters Primary School, Rokeby School and Newham College. He was also mentored and supported by Rosetta Arts founder Yvonne Humble. The Newham Heritage Month 2023 project will see the screening of the twice Bafta nominated film McQueen followed by a discussion with Gary James McQueen – Lee’s nephew and Artist and Ian Bonhôte, Director and Producer of the film which gives insights into Lee’s personal life and career.
Lee will also be honoured with a Newham Heritage Plaque. The blue plaque will be on display during the screening and the blue plaque will be unveiled in the Borough at the end of Newham Heritage Month.
