South Asian Heritage Month events

The month-long celebration of South Asian history supported by Newham Council continues into August and marks the contribution of the diaspora community who have made Newham their home.

It is an opportunity to see, hear taste and explore what it means to be South Asian in the 21st century, as well as examine how the community has helped build the diverse Britain of today.

4 Aug: Modern Mughal Portrait Workshop 

Forest Gate Youth Zone

A workshop for young people with local artist Momtaz Begum-Hossain, making portraits inspired by Mughal portraiture. Participants will make their own portrait on a small canvas.

11 Aug: Launch of Oral History Project Talking of the Olympics

A film and digital installation featuring the testimonies of Newham residents from a diverse range of South Asian heritages on what difference the Olympics and Paralympics has made to their lives. View on newhamsouthasianheritage.org/events/oral-history-project-talking-of-the-olympics

12 Aug: 6pm Ahimsa Ghandi: The Power of the Powerless

Stratford East Picturehouse

Watch a screening of Ahimsa Gandhi: The Power of the Powerless, narrating his message of non-violence, it’s impact on many other movements such as the Civil Rights Movement. 

17 Aug: 6.30-9pm An evening of Qawwali

Old Town Hall Stratford

An evening of Qawwali with The Khan Brothers Qawwali group who have been performing for over 30 years in the UK and Europe, carrying forward the tradition of their ancestors.
