Forest Gate children raise their voices for unveiling

St Anthony’s Catholic primary school in Forest Gate was one of a limited number of schools chosen to take part in this year’s
Windrush Day event at the Southbank Centre. The children sang on stage to commemorate the unveiling of a new permanent Windrush Monument at Waterloo Station.

The Windrush Day unveiling was attended by Baroness Floella Benjamin, Baroness Doreen Lawrence OBE, Ainsley Harriott
MBE, Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones MBE, Levi Roots as well as Windrush Pioneers Alfred Gardner and John Richards, who with the support of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and six young descendants of the Windrush Generation unveiled the statue created by Basil Watson.

The HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks in 1948 carrying passengers from Jamaica, Bermuda, Mexico, Trinidad, British Guyana, Poland and other countries, including 119 British people who were returning home.
