Shabira Papain is one of the organisers of the People Street Party planned for Mitcham Road in East Ham on 3 June. Originally from Australia, for the past 20 years Shabira has been involved in community development in east London and is the founder of People Street, a community development company aimed at tackling inequalities.
Shabira’s aims for the party are to celebrate Newham’s diversity, provide stimulating activities for the children, promote a micro-economy from local businesses, spark new connections, and stimulate local engagement.
Shabira hopes to involve local businesses such as the Afghani Halaal Butchers in High Street South, the Romanian Magazin nearby, and a local estate agent.
Each resident of Mitcham Road was invited to sign approval for the event and get involved in its organisation.
Several of the event stalls are to be facilitated by local residents including young people – Jaspar, 14, and Sean, 13, who are hosting a tea and coffee stall; Madelaine, 10, will run a lemonade stall; and Ananchel, 9, will host a cake stand with her mum.
Some of the activities include for children – Face Painting, Cardboard City, sponsored by Simon Taylor Estate Agents, egg-and-spoon race, children’s book sale, clothes sale and arts and crafts with children’s art parade. There will also be food stalls with Vietnamese, Sri Lankan and Bengali dishes available.
There will also be a public health stall and a charity jumble stall. Local police, fire brigade and Active Newham were also invited.
The poster was created by Madelaine and Selma, aged 10. Design by 21-87. For more information, head to peoplestreet.net
