Seventeen student athletes have been selected for this year’s NewVIc Knights Basketball programme. The academy will be competing in the Association of Colleges and also London Basketball Association college league. The first home game is on Wednesday, 17 November against Barnett Southgate College. Well done to East London Rugby Football Club Vixens Kat Salthouse and Nikki Barlex, based at Stratford Fire Station, who have been selected to play for the women’s England Fire Service squad. The England women fire service team play their first game of the season on 24 November at 2pm at the London Welsh RFC against the British Police women’s team. University of East London scholar and London Lions Basketball player Holly Winterburn is the youngest player in Women’s British Basketball League (WBBL) history to hit 1,000 points. 

Congratulations to the men’s London Lions Basketball team who made history when they became the first British Basketball League (BBL) team to win in Europe since 2004. The women’s team were also successful in Europe when they beat Rutronik Stars Keltern 81-79 in their regular season opener. The men’s team are scheduled to play a home game against Donar Groningen on 3 November and two away games, on 10 and 17 November.

Clapton CFC’s Young Tons open training sessions are held every Wednesday at 6pm on the 3G at Wadham Lodge, Walthamstow. Weekly sessions are planned for young people in Newham aged 13 and over in Forest Gate. Clapton have formed their first youth team, a mixed under eight year-olds, who have joined a Saturday morning league in Hackney. New players can just come along but please register interest beforehand. They are also looking for coaches and volunteers.

ANM FC are named ‘Assembly of Nation Ministry’ because that’s the name of the church some of the players attend. The team plays in the Ilford and District Church League. Their home ground is Wanstead Flats Playing Fields at Aldersbrook Road, E12 5HH. They have home games on 6 and 20 November.

Athletic Newham FC in the Essex Senior League are scheduled to play their old friends White Ensign who secured promotion with them from the Thurlow Nunn League. Ensign are now nine games unbeaten and are real contenders.

The team will also face Little Oakley FC for the second time this season at their home ground in Plaistow.

Bonny Downs Community Association’s Women and Non-Binary Football open training sessions are on Wednesdays, 6.30pm- 8.30pm at the Bobby Moore Sports Pavilion in East Ham.

Congratulations to Messrs Rahman, Templeman, Robinson and Caddy, all teachers from St Bons, known as the Quadfathers who raised more than £1,200 for Chartwell Cancer Trust in the National CrossFit event Battle Cancer at Kensington Olympia. Stuart Webb enjoyed his first victory as caretaker manager of Upton Park Ladies during their cup tie against Tower Hamlets Women’s FC (THWFC) reserves.

After weeks of preparation, six youngsters from the Forest Cubs Boxing Club based at Durning Hall in Forest Gate, were presented with a certificate of achievement. The students demonstrated their basic level of boxing skill and training with several runs for endurance, repeated groundwork and skipping drills.

Congratulations to the 313 Fitness Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) team and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu squad. They competed in the Cage Warriors South East and Nova Grappling Open events.

Lister Community School upper school Tennis teams reached the Division 2 Essex final by winning their regional group stages. The finals are held this month against Brentwood school and Chelmsford County High school for girls..

The Newham and Essex Beagles AC men’s team came third at the South of England AA Cross Country Relays. This is their first success since the passing of former team manager Bob Smith.
