A former GP clinic could be turned into a tuition centre if plans submitted to Newham Council are approved.

Private tuition company The Concept Master wants planning permission to change the use of 292A Barking Road in East Ham.

It says its plans would “bring social, educational and economic benefits to the local community”.

The address previously housed St Bartholomew’s GP Surgery, next to St Bartholomew’s Church. However, the surgery has since moved 160 metres west to a new development at 269 Barking Road and is now the Aspire Medical Centre.

Plans for the new tuition centre say the conversion would allow the site of the former clinic to be kept in community use. They say the centre would provide after school and weekend tutoring for maths, science and English, as well as exam preparation.

The plans also say the centre would employ at least 30 part-time tutors, three or four admin staff and one full-time manager.

The plans say the centre would “deliver social, educational, and economic benefits, providing a local, accessible educational facility, creating employment opportunities”.

They argue that this would improve the “vitality” of the shopping parade along Barking Road.

The Concept Master submitted its planning application to the council on 14th November, and became visible on the council’s planning portal on 8th December. The application is now pending consideration by council planning officers.
