Stratford and Bow MP Uma Kumaran has welcomed the government’s announcement of an extra £427,000 to support disabled people and elderly residents across Newham.

The extra funding, including an extra £380,000 for neighbouring Tower Hamlets, is part of an £86 million boost to the Disabled Facilities Grant for this financial year.

Ms Kumaran said the package of support will help to keep older people in Stratford and Bow out of hospital and living at home independently, for longer.

“It’s great to see a significant amount of funding secured for disabled and elderly residents in Newham, ” Ms Kumaran said. “This investment will help make a huge difference to people’s lives, helping some Stratford and Bow residents continue to live at home with the dignity, independence, and quality of life they deserve.

“I’ve spoken to so many residents about the urgent need for greater investment in social care locally. Labour promised to prioritise the funding and long-overdue reforms that our communities desperately need. It’s fantastic to see that we are delivering on that promise in government.”
