Experts and leaders discuss disparities in Black health, focusing on housing, employment, and green spaces.
Newham health leaders joined discussions in a London-wide debate on black health held at City Hall in October. Custom House Councillor Thelma Odoi hosted the event Improving Black Health which addressed health disparities affecting Black communities.
On the panel were Jabeer Butt, CEO of the Race Equality Foundation, Charles Kwaku-Odoi, Chief Executive of the Caribbean and African Health Network, Carol Webley-Brown, author of Memoirs of an NHS Black Mental Health Nurse, and Dr. Jenny Douglas, a senior lecturer in health promotion.
The meeting also heard from East Ham MP and Minister for Pensions, Sir Stephen Timms, Jason Strelitz, Newham Council’s Corporate Director of health, and East Ham Councillor Susan Masters, chair of Newham Council’s Health and Social Care Commission. The discussions underscored the urgent need for initiatives that promote secure employment, quality housing, and access to safe green spaces.
