The National City of Sanctuary charity has awarded Newham Council the Borough of Sanctuary status. The award recognises work to support people seeking sanctuary. The Borough was also awarded for creating a culture that welcomes the contribution of refugees and other sanctuary seekers.

Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz said: “Many of those who settle here come with gifts, in the form of their knowledge, skills and ambitions. These additions make Newham the most diverse, rewarding and beautiful borough to live in.”
