Events kick off with a conversation at Stratford Town Hall, reports Neandra Etienne
Newham’s official programme of activities for Black History Month, the annual celebration that honours the contributions of the Black African and Caribbean communities at local and national level. The month’s events begin on Friday 4th October with a conversation between writers Aamna Mohdin and Kimberly McIntosh at the Town Hall, Stratford.
The theme for this year, Reclaiming Narratives, signifies a dedication to addressing historical inaccuracies and seizing control of narratives by highlighting stories, allegories, and histories.
A variety of free talks, workshops, markets, and musical performances will be featured throughout the month, produced by community partners.
The annual Black Pound Market returns, taking place at Woodgrange Market and Rathbone Market. To close the month of celebrations, Ruff Sqwad Arts Foundation will produce a finale event taking audiences through the history of Black British music and showcasing young new talent on the scene.
No news is bad news
Independent news outlets like ours – reporting for the community without rich backers – are under threat of closure, turning British towns into news deserts.
The audiences they serve know less, understand less, and can do less.
