Local residents and friends of Benjamin Zephaniah gathered at Forest Gate Community Garden on 18 August to share their memories, read his poetry and celebrate his life and achievements.

Benjamin was an Ambassador for the Vegan Society so visitors could buy West Indian vegan food, and Newham Bookshop sold Benjamin’s books. A scrapbook of press cuttings compiled by Maudlyn, who knew him when he lived in Newham, was on display and visitors were encouraged to add to the Benjamin Zephaniah tribute book.

To close the event Councillor Winston Vaughan (above) unveiled a banner and plaque.
