A new book explores lesser known spots in the borough, including a museum and shop devoted to the (sometimes) last of the Time Lords

Local author Malcolm Britten is renowned for his books recording the changing face of Newham and its most noteworthy landmarks.
But his latest guide Secret Newham delves into the often quirky and curious history of the towns that make up the Borough, revealing remarkable characters, the stories behind street names and some unusual events.
One of the most unusual businesses featured is East Ham’s The Who Shop that moved from a Wapping warehouse to High Street North in 1984, and then to its current location in Barking Road in 2009. It’s all things Doctor Who, selling items linked to the BBC programme, but also housing a Doctor Who museum. And there is a wall of pictures featuring the stars of the show who have visited the shop over the years. Who knew?
Hammers fans will be aware of the World Cup winners statue opposite the Boleyn pub on Barking Road, but have you seen the Bonds and Brooking mural on the corner of Priory Road?
Plenty to discover in this guide, published recently. Secret Newham, Amberley Publishing, £15.99.
