A new plan has been adopted for New Beckton Park, Beckton District Park South, Beckton Corridor and King George V Park, reports Peter Landman

A grand plan for the future of Beckton parks has been adopted by Newham Council which will transform the area covering New Beckton Park, Beckton District Park South, Beckton Corridor and King George V Park.
The new development proposals include a plan to reopen a city animal farm following the controversial closure of Newham City Farm. The proposals, prepared by East Architecture Landscape Urban Design who carried out an extensive consultation with members of the public, also includes more play area facilities and:
- a new mass entertainment space with potential for an audience of 12,000.
- Provision of more café facilities
- Creation of a beach and swimming lido
- A Community Farm and Green Skills Hub
There will also be more sports facilities including a floodlit football pitch, more tennis courts and cricket nets as well as space for dog walkers and new wildlife space with a new forest garden in the orchard area, and a new wildlife space in Beckton Meadows.
Along with the detail of the plans the Council has also ensured that inclusivity and environment charters have been adopted with pledges to install renewable energy in new and refurbished buildings and to plant new trees and shrubs.
There has also been a focus on connectivity of paths, and other upgrades and to enhance security, CCTV and lights are to be installed along main routes.
The plan, which will be implemented in phases, begins with a commissioning process for the new animal farm; the refurbishment of the Will Thorne Pavillion; improvement of the ecology of the lake; and start on the new play area.
Deputy Mayor Councillor James Asser, and also Cabinet lead for the environment, says he hopes the plan will set a standard to be followed for all future park developments.
