Learning in recovery

A Recovery College in Newham set up with aims to help vulnerable people.

By Peter Landman

East London NHS Foundation Trust has opened a Recovery College in Newham. The Recovery College aims to help to people with mental health issues to avoid and recover from mental health trauma.

The courses operate through tuition and offer the opportunity to meet together, share live experiences, discuss issues and
join in self expression activities. They are facilitated by specially trained in-house tutors who themselves have suffered from
mental illness.

On some courses outside experts are invited, but the emphasis on participation remains.

The Spring course catalogue lists more than 30 short courses covering:

  • assessing treatments: “making your medication work for you” and “ whose therapy is it anyway”;
  • “channelising” basic emotions, including excessive stress, anger, fear, sadness; and building up confidence to say NO;
  • activities including origami, drumming, growing plants and writing for self expression;
  • money advice;
  • addictions and the conditions ADHD and dyslexia. These include how to stop smoking.

The courses are free and there is no assessment procedure to enrol and encourages Individual student learning plans.
