Boleyn and Wall End wards are set for July polls in the first by-elections in Newham since voter ID was introduced
By Dean Armond
Newham Council is to have two by-elections after Cllr Cecilia Welsh (Labour, Boleyn Ward) announced she is standing down for personal reasons while Cllr Luke Masters (Labour, Wall End Ward) has resigned to focus on his fight to win a Parliamentary seat in York.
The Labour Party has already started to select two candidates in a process overseen by the National Executive Committee, and the opposition, the Green Party, is also expected to field candidates in both wards. Several independent candidates and other parties have also expressed interest in standing.
These will be the first by-elections to be held in Newham since Voter ID was introduced in England. People without a recognised Photo ID document will have to obtain a Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) and present this at the polling station
A by-election will be held in Boleyn and Wall End Ward on Thursday 13 July 2023.
Details can be found at the Newham Council website.
