On top of the world! Star award for Newham’s leading children’s nurse

Newham’s community children’s matron Rebecca Daniels reached a high point in her career this summer when she was presented with a major award for her work in supporting the Borough’s children after a charity climb of Mount Snowden.

Rebecca was presented with a Cavell Star Award after reaching the summit of Mount Snowdon this summer. She and her nursing colleagues were there to raise money for the Snowdon Challenge, a fundraiser to support nurses and midwives suffering financial hardship.

She is East London NHS Foundation Trust’s Modern Matron and was presented with the award in an impromptu ceremony now she plans to extend her role with the Queen’s Nursing Institute nationally.

Rebecca was taken by surprise when her colleagues presented her with the prestigious Cavell Star , a national award that recognises the outstanding work of nurses and midwives.

The Snowdon Challenge is part of an annual fundraising drive to raise essential funds for nurses in personal and financial hardship.

In the teeth of 50 mph winds, rain and hail, Rebecca received her award which recognises her role in the formation of the Children’s Community Nurse national forum during the pandemic and for ”‘going above and beyond” for her colleagues at the East London NHS Foundation Trust.

The CCN forum’s collective efforts helped to change legislation to enable children needing aerosol-generated procedures could get back to school with their peers.

This led to Rebecca’s appointment by the Queen’s Nursing Institute to lead their development of new Transition to Community Children’s Nursing resources.

Rebecca said: “It was an absolutely fabulous challenge and we will be recruiting more people to join us next year to make the event bigger and raise even more essential money for nurses, HCA and midwives in need of financial and personal support.

“I’m delighted to have been awarded a Cavell Star – and made getting to the peak of Snowdon twice as memorable!”
