Become a buddy to help young people

Start Young UK is looking for sponsors to mentor children from disadvantaged backgrounds in London schools from this month.

The charity, which was formed in Newham from a Christmas Gifting initiative, is looking to secure sponsors for young children from the age of five upwards, to join their buddy scheme.

The scheme will provide basic needs such as school uniform, PE kit, support towards school trips and other educational costs.  The child will attend a community club one evening per week which will give respite for parents and build valuable skills for the child.

The buddy will support through letter writing a minimum of once a month to their sponsored child. They can also support with work experience, apprenticeships and opportunities of securing employment.

Due to safeguarding issues, meetings with sponsored children take place in a safe setting. Your organisation may arrange a team day supporting the school in their various volunteer activities such as painting, gardening, or cleaning the chicken coup. All contact will be via the charity and you will receive a quarterly update on your child and a small passport photo.

You can register an interest on startyounguk.com or email Angela Caroo and she will forward your details.

Start Young UK is now a registered charity which will act as a resource for young people from the age of 5-18 who live in underprivileged areas of London.

Start Young UK is looking for the following support:

  • Volunteers
  • Donations
  • Premises
  • Mentors
  • Part-time Administrator to be based in the school.
