The Keeping Adults Safe in Newham event that took place on 19 November was attended by over 40 participants from local organisations, community groups and residents.
Head of Healthwatch, Julie Pal, presented the results of a nine months long safeguarding engagement including the findings of research and recommendations arising from a training the trainer outreach programme with grassroots groups and organisations to help them raise awareness of safeguarding in their communities.
Newham Safeguarding Adults Board (NSAB) has also established a community engagement sub-group, Keeping All Adults Safe, to reframe safeguarding activity in the Borough.
Claire Solley and Tony Pape from Newham’s Safeguarding services talked about how safeguarding works and how it improves accessibility for residents.
Councillor Zulfiqar Ali also hosted a discussion on ways to involve the community and voluntary sector in safeguarding. The group suggested refraining from using the term ‘safeguarding’ to avoid translation miscommunication and implementing a co-working strategy between the Safeguarding Adults Board (SAB) and community organisations whom residents trust.
