Newham residents had the chance to indulge their love of art after joining an online course run by the Mary Ward College for adults. The class, who were predominantly over 60 and all sharing an interest in arts and crafts, provided a social outlet and the opportunity to build new friendships during lockdown.
Students focused on creating three dimensional insects using natural and recycled materials such as egg boxes, garlic bags, fruit packaging, etc. Once lockdown restrictions eased, the group was able to meet in person for the first time and view each other’s work. The 18 insects were then framed and hung on display at Stratford library for public viewing until the end of September.
The Mary Ward Centre is currently based in Holborn but will relocate to Stratford by 2022. Visit their website for a full list of courses and head over to Stratford library to see the insect sculptures recycled results and be inspired to turn your rubbish into art.
