Training Newham’s unsung carers

Unpaid carers have been pushed to their limits every day caring for loved ones throughout the pandemic. They have often been overlooked and overwhelmed, working under pressure and saving the government billions of pounds every day. We should also remember the contribution of young carers and the role they play.

The Carers Health Empowerment Programme (CHEP), funded by the Big Lottery Fund, has provided support — aiming to empower carers in Newham to become more resilient, through professional training and workshops, and then providing  practical and holistic support by mentoring other carers, in a friendly and social environment.

In year one of the programme carers from a variety of groups and organisations in Newham attended workshops to help determine the content for the programme in year two from June 2020 to May 2021. Those who took part expressed how challenging it was to study during lockdown, while taking care of their loved ones at the same time.

All carers who completed the course thanked Shirley Barber who designed and delivered the advocacy module. She also delivered training relating to the rights of carers and those they care for. Carers also thanked Catherine Isles who facilitates Health and Wellbeing for the carers and the Renewal Programme for their support and patience during covid challenging times.

In the picture nine proud carers receive their awards for completing the course.
