Sheltered housing: a vibrant alternative to isolation

In today’s uncertain economy being able to find a place to rent that is affordable can be challenging.

After being on the housing register for two years I requested to be rehoused in sheltered housing and moved into Ruscoe Road in October 2018, I am very happy there and enjoy the comfort of a secure tenancy with social rent.

Sheltered housing is typically a studio or one bedroom accommodation. This is the ideal situation for older people as it allows for independence and reduces social isolation and vulnerability.

“Ruscoe Road is a vibrant sheltered housing scheme at the heart of Canning Town. Key staff are committed to delivering excellent housing related support. It boasts a recently refurbished community room, with Wi-Fi access, beautiful gardens and vegetable patches, regular events in conjunction with a number of local charities and a community spirit second to none.” Housingcare.org

Jim has lived happily in Ruscoe Road for almost 21 years and was rehoused within a few weeks of his private landlord selling his home.

Ruscoe Road (Council) and Rowntree Clifford Close (Housing Association) are two types of sheltered housing, which normally have a small number of tenants.

As a tenant of sheltered housing you could expect the following amenities:-

  • Centre manager
  • 24 Hour support service

  • Communal lounge
  • Laundry room
  • Guest facilities
  • Communal garden
  • Wheelchair accessibility
  • Easy access to local shops and stations
  • GP close by
  • Regular social activities
  • Secure fob door entry system.

Bob has lived in Rowntree Clifford Close for 11 years. He is a Tenant Rep who advocates for and supports residents who need help with claiming a range of benefits. He says “it gives my life purpose”.

The age range for eligibility for Housing Association properties is 55 and over, Council properties is 60 and above.
