Designs That Travel: A celebration of South Asian Textiles

The Gate Library, Forest Gate July 3rd – 31st

Newham Heritage Month in May with fun and free activities from all ends of the Borough may be over but participants in artist Ellie Burkett’s project, Designs That Travel, have been busy completing beautiful samples which they started during a series of Zoom and in-person embroidery workshops inspired by khetha quilts handed down from mother to daughter in Bangladesh.

“I have a feeling that I am back home, as after 10 years I am sewing and recalling old memories,” said one participant.

The embroideries and khetha will be on show in the window display of The Gate Library, Forest Gate during July.

Ellie will share her research about the sinking of the SS Persia, and of the Newham residents and South Asian seafarers, many from Sylhet, who were crew on this ill fated liner.
