Part Two: General discussion

  • What do we mean by “Black”, is this a political term which we use to cover anyone of a non-white origin? Or is it an ethnic term and should we therefore use it only to describe people or communities of African and Afro-Caribbean origin as well as black-British people?
  • Terminology: should we use the term “BAME” to cover everyone from a different ethnic minority background? Do people readily identify with this term?
  • How can we encourage more action to combat institutional discrimination through good communications – case studies NHS and health and social care sector? The Police?
  • What more can Newham Voices do in practical terms? Organise events to raise awareness of discrimination issues? Organise a regular column to write about these issues? Organise an annual community journalism prize for work combating racial discrimination?
