For people who live in and around Forest Gate, Durning Hall has been a hub for different community activities for more than 60 years.
However, as reported in Newham Voices in August, structural issues, deterioration, and changing demand led to the decision to redevelop the site, which comprises the hall, an adjoining community/business centre and retail outlets running from the corner of Earlham Grove up to the Co-op on the Woodgrange Road.

The first consultation period ended in June and the charity Aston-Mansfield, the owner and operator of Durning Hall, has asked for further feedback on the revised proposals, which includes a “youth enterprise pop-up space” and “creative children’s playspace”.
Given the importance of Durning Hall to residents of all ages, locals are particularly concerned that the site is developed to meet the needs – and remains part of – the whole community and not just focused on children and youth.
At present, the plans do not include a hall for hire to the general public nor facilities aimed at adults and senior members of the community.
But people can still ensure that the development reflects the needs of the community now and for future generations. They can have their say at durninghall.co.uk. The deadline for comment is 18th November 2020.
